A Last note !
Two celebrated suicide ceremony ... A stone... And lust for life ...
There could be no better symbolism than this. The way master Japanese directors make movies ,everytime i watched those classic and feel deeply spritual and elevated. Long time ago i watched Kitano's "Hanna bi" mood of flower and evolution of characters ,they are so intrinsically linked ..they director uses nature and its representation in the story its amazing . For example tonight i watched "A last note" this is one of the loviliest post war Japanese movies, where an old actress visits her summer house and hears the narratives her old friend suicide .she revisits her friend's rituals of suicide ,something awakens in her heart and she gets so inspired by that celebrated ritual that she would a stone for her grave.just as her dead friend had kept one strong stone to nail his grave....
However Story has many unexpected turns ,its twist is not like Hitchcock's movie ,but its subtle struggle of life and death, its a continuous interplay between wish to die and zeal to love. But that zeal would only come after revisiting the path of death. Morimoto(lead character and director 'wife) revisits her youth's best friend yomie, replays chekhov seagulls and gives life to her senile yomie, say good bye and finally revisits their ways to suicide ...
today was last day of this festival de extraordinaire ....last movie was black rain...
The way Japanese directors present the story through symbolism its unbelievable .(oh this is just repetetion of previous thought. )
This festival gave me deeper glimpse of postwar Japanese life. movie based on Hiroshima was another good movie.i am sure there were many better movies than Black Rain made after the nuclear explosion however characters represented in this film are complex and reflect the power of director and narrator.its very subtle with usual dark scenes . Amidst of nuclear tragedy ,characters are presented with their trivial routines. One particular character influenced me was mentally disable neighbour of Tomiko (i guess thats the name of lead actress).noise of engine would make him crazy and he would literally go and stop the vehicle.people lock him in the closed door, in his closed world he would carve out beautifull sculpture of Buddha from the dead black stones ...what a life ..?and then he meets Tomiko and falls in love.....
